Meet Jerry

Jerry Relph was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1944, while his father was serving in the Army.  After his father’s military service ended Jerry’s family moved several times as his father’s career as a corporate attorney and entrepreneur progressed. Jerry’s family eventually moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where Jerry graduated from High School in 1962.  He obtained a BA in Philosophy in 1966, from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. During his high school and college years Jerry was always active in sports, earning letters in swimming at Ann Arbor and in hockey at Carleton.

After a short period of employment in Minnesota, Jerry enlisted in the Marine Corps and eventually served in Vietnam. While in the Marines, he received training in Nuclear, Chemical and Biological warfare in addition to his regular duties as a Marine Officer. He completed his service in the Marine Corps in 1970. Jerry’s service in the Marines taught him leadership and the value of discipline.

After his military service, Jerry attended William Mitchell College of Law while working full time for 3M Company where he met his wife Colette.  They were married in 1972 while Jerry was finishing his Juris Doctor degree.

Jerry graduated from law school in 1974, then moved with Colette to St. Charles, MN, where he joined a small law firm and began raising a family. As well as practicing law, he was active in the community doing volunteer work and representing St. Charles as its City Attorney.

In 1984 Jerry, Colette and his two children, Kerry and Dana, moved to St. Cloud, where Jerry joined the Law Firm of Hughes, Thoreen, Mathews and Sullivan. Jerry continued his community involvement volunteering for many charitable, civic and professional organizations.

After Jerry’s wife Colette passed away in 1999, Jerry sought a new direction for his life. He joined forces with a long time friend and began building a small company.  It grew into a thriving business creating, producing and selling digital lake maps for GPS devices under the name of LakeMaster.

jerry_pegiDuring this busy time Jerry was blessed with the chance to marry Pegi Broker, whose husband had also passed away.  They were married in 2002, and Jerry took on the task of helping to raise a second family consisting of Pegi’s 4 children: Laura, Carl, Steven and Eric. He also continued to help build LakeMaster into an enterprise selling its products throughout the Central and Eastern parts of the United States. Jerry’s experience with LakeMaster added to his understanding of entrepreneurship and the obstacles small businesses face in today’s economic and regulatory environment.

In 2012 after selling his business, Jerry reduced his business activities to spend more time pursuing his passion for the outdoors.

Jerry feels fortunate that he has truly lived the American Dream. Jerry’s decision to seek the Minnesota Senate seat is largely motivated by his desire for our children and grandchildren to have the same great opportunity to pursue their dreams. His life experience has given him a strong moral sense that guides his life and decision making. Jerry feels a strong bond to the St. Cloud community that supports him. He also believes these life experiences will make him an effective voice advocating for the people of St Cloud and the surrounding area.
